Where are we?

The Post Carbon Community program is coming to a Community near you. Carbon Cutter's target Community is in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom. The pilot neighbourhood will be the Totteridge Conservation Area. High Wycombe is only 5 miles from the 'Low Carbon' Community in Marlow down on the River Thames.

High Wycombe is a former furniture manufacturing town about 20 miles West and North of London. It has an urban population of around 92,800 people and total area population of 160,466. Population is actually predicted to fall slowly in the next 30 years.

     Other key facts:

  • 71% is within an official "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty"

  • 48% is within an official "Green Belt".

  • 311 "County Wildlife Sites" identified within the area

  • 53 "Scheduled Ancient Monuments

  • 18% of District is covered in Woodland with 336 pockets on "Ancient Woodland"

  • 886 hectares are "Sites of Special Scientific Interest"

  • 1468 Tonnes of CO2 saved per year by Council initiatives in Energy Efficiency since 2001

  • 66 "Conservation Areas"

  • Proportion of new homes built of previously developed land is 96%

  • Recycling rates are below target - 16% versus 25%

  • The average household has 2.4 cars - higher than average for England

  • 10.500 workers commute from High Wycombe area to London (about 13% of the workforce)

Since the move to the new Carbon Cutters HQ, in the Totteridge Conservation area in May 2008, we started immediate work to completely rejuvenate the property from ECO-no-hoper to shining example.... We have started looking for partners in the Council and Industry to help us install a Biomass Wood Pellet Boiler. This will be no small feat in a Conservation AND Smoke Control Zone! We need Planning Permission for almost anything. However the first CFL's and draught excluders are in place. We will follow up with new Sheep's Wool Loft Insulation.
